Cybersecurity Workshops for Children with IBIES Participation

The Institute for Research and Social Education Foundation (IBIES) co-organized an educational project concerning digital threats to the youngest technology users. The initiative was carried out by the Polish Association for Security (PAS) with substantive support from experts of the Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime.

Expert Knowledge in Practice

A specialist from CBZC conducted an intensive training during which participants – parents and teachers – had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the current picture of threats in the online space. The workshops were based on cases from investigative practice and analysis of mechanisms used by perpetrators of internet crimes targeting children.

During the sessions, concrete scenarios of dangerous situations that children may encounter while browsing social media, using messengers, or participating in multiplayer games were discussed. Participants learned characteristic behavioral patterns of people posing a threat and learned to recognize early warning signals indicating a child’s potential contact with dangerous content or a person.

Digital Protection Tools

An important part of the program was the presentation of available technical solutions supporting control over children’s activity on the network. Functions of operating systems, parental applications, and privacy settings in popular services were discussed, which allow for the implementation of appropriate safeguards without completely restricting children’s access to the digital world.

An equally important element was the conversation about building open communication with children about their online experiences. Participants received guidance on how to talk with young people about threats in a way that builds trust, rather than causing fear or the child’s withdrawal.

Significance of Preventive Education

A conscious approach to digital security issues currently constitutes an indispensable element of contemporary upbringing. The conducted workshops equipped their participants with skills allowing for active counteraction of risks and responding to worrying situations with appropriate speed and effectiveness.
